The Accidental CFO — The Agentic AI Reality Check

“Stories and lessons from an unexpected journey in finance.”

Now that we are firmly into 2026, the tech conversation has officially shifted. We’ve moved past the novelty of GenAI (chatting and drafting) and entered the era of Agentic AI (executing and doing).

We are looking at systems that don’t just summarize a variance report, but actively execute workflows, reconcile subledgers, and even settle routine trades. Let’s be absolutely clear: this is the most exciting evolution in corporate finance since the invention of the spreadsheet. It is the future, and we should be running toward it.

But as the CFO, my job is to be the pragmatic navigator. Before we hand over the keys to the financial kingdom, we have to look closely at the “roads” these AI agents will be driving on.

That road is our internal data.

The “High-Speed” Reality Check

We all know the oldest rule in finance: garbage in, garbage out. Agentic AI puts that rule on hyper-drive. If your ERP data is incomplete, or your vendor master file is full of duplicates, an AI agent isn’t going to magically fix it. Instead, it risks becoming a high-speed error multiplier, executing flawed logic with terrifying efficiency.

The Massive Opportunity

Here is the incredibly positive spin: Agentic AI is the ultimate catalyst we’ve always needed to finally perfect our data hygiene. The promise of an autonomous back-office is the “carrot” that will finally get the entire organization to care about data governance.

When we get the data right, the upside is staggering. Here is how we prepare for the Agentic era:

Agentic AI isn’t here to replace the finance department; it’s here to scale our impact. It will unlock a level of agility we’ve only dreamed of—provided we are willing to put in the work to give these agents the clean, reliable data they need to thrive.

The future is automated, but it starts with accuracy.

What is the very first manual workflow you plan to hand over to an AI agent once your data is ready for it?
